Survival Lessons Learned From US Airways Flight 1549 Give Banking CEOs Something to Emulate

As I watched Larry King Live on February 11, US Airways flight 1549 survivors repeated these three words: strength, training, teamwork. Both the crew and the passengers used them to describe what made the landing and the rescue miraculous successes.

Captain Sullenberger and copilot Jeffrey Skiles used every bit of their inner strength and training to use the Hudson River as runway of survival. Their efforts have been called "the most successful water landing in aviation history." Moreover, they were part of the team that aided in the rescue; Captain 'Sully' was the last to evacuate his plane, but not until he had made two surveillance walks down the aisle, checking for passengers. All the while, the plane was sinking.

Copilot Skiles also aided in the rescue, giving the shirt off his back to a trembling passenger who had jumped into the frigid waters and then boarded a raft. Both he and Captain Sully retrieved life vests that the passengers had left behind and offered them to passengers without one as they hurriedly exited.

The three flight attendants efficiently, professionally, and bravely aided every passenger by helping them exit and board the life rafts. One of them was severely wounded and in pain.

When the media, and even President Obama, remarked about the crew's heroism, the response was simply, "we did the job we were trained to do." Wisely, flight attendant Sheila Dail summarized the successful survival on one factor: teamwork.

This brings me to my point: where is the evidence of strength, training, and teamwork when it comes to defaulting banks' CEOs, mainly the eight who testified before Congress admitting to "having learned their lesson" AFTER collecting $191 million in total salaries? Where were their instincts telling some to use their strength and training so that their bank would not default in the first place? Where was their integrity when it came to collecting decadent sums of salaries and bonuses without accountability to their employees, investors, and tax payers who bailed them out?

If they have learned a lesson, it should be the one taught by the survivors of flight 1549: survival means accountability in every way, whether you're paid a little or a lot--even if your compensation is a mere "thank you". If these "gentleman" have learned a lesson, let them prove it by giving back to their community by denying themselves salaries and bonuses for the sake of their company, their country, and future generations. This is the life vest that they owe for piloting their company into a disastrous dive. This is the clipboard containing all of the survivors' names that Captain Sully carried out of his plane. This is part of the salvage operation that will save our nation.

I challenge all the CEOs of our nation to choose to be part of the team leading us toward survival, rather than play the bullies who never made it on the team. I ask you directly, "Do you want to unselfishly be part of the rescue operation or emulate the plane survivor in her fur coat who asked another survivor to go back inside the drowning plane and retrieve her purse?"

Will it Be Alicante Or Further This Year For Winter Sunshine?

Spain and in particular Alicante flight and Malaga used to be the place many British tourists would escape to for some warmer weather however with the continual weakening of the pound it looks it will be destinations that are found outside Europe that will be popular this winter and for the foreseeable future. Destinations such as Egypt are likely to be popular as holidaymakers avoid countries with the Euro. Adding in the increased flight availability means cheaper flights to Sharm El Sheikh and other main destinations in Egypt.

While airlines have swapped to their winter schedules many have moved to more popular routes to capture winter audiences which mean there has been a cut in flights to Alicante.

However there are still operators like the no frills operators that service this route so it will still be possible for the many Spanish students and those working in Britain to return home this winter to spend Christmas with their families. The advice would be to book that Alicante flight as soon as you know when you have finished exams or can holidays from work as we all know when booking a no frills flight the price will increase as time goes by and gets closer to the departure date and those seats fill up.

While Alicante wouldn't be able to compete with the temperatures of the year round sunshine you find in Egypt you can still enjoy a warm 16-18 degrees Celsius. Perfect for those people who like the warmth and not hot temperatures.

If you love to party though then the Spain is the place to go, there are so many festivals taking place throughout the year. If you plan to go in the Christmas period it is worth ensuring you are there for Reyes Magos translated as the Three Wise Men. The streets are filled with light decorating the streets, young and older people enjoying the music with the young children anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Three Wise Men to bring them presents. This festival is one not to miss so when booking an Alicante flight make sure you will be there for the 5th and 6th of January.

A Journey in The Mandelbrot set [1280x720]

The mathematician Benoît Mandelbrot was the first person to use a computer to visualize the behaviour of a dynamic system. In 1975 he introduced the word fractal (from the Latin fractus, broken) to denote objects with fractional dimension. His scientific research built the foundation of fractal geometry the link between classical mathematics and the chaos of atmospheric turbulence, biological populations and the stock market. Decades before fractals were named several mathematicians had studied them Weierstrass, Koch, Lévy, Cantor, Poincaré and Julia. This film is based on the exhibition "Seduction" ( mandelbrot-set.elica.net ) and it blends computer generated images from the Mandelbrot set with digital photographs from the real life. The song used in the film is "Vitae Amandae" by Cathleen Trezza from Firewisp Music ( www.firewispmusic.com ). The digital photographs are contributed by Annette Olson, Daisuke Tomiyasu,Elfi Berndl,Jon Sullivan, John French, Nicholas Gere, and Simon Tong. Credits editing is done by Louise Blyton. The flight over the fractal and the dive down in its abysm is generated by several specially designed programs that model NURBS-based trajectories. The programs are written in Logo ( http and lhogho.sourceforge.net ) and Pascal. The original movie is HD720p, 1.5GB. The raw data for all 7500 frames is about 20GB. Production took about 2 months, while the pure rendering time for the hardest frame was 10 hours. No software, hardware or mathematical ...

How An International Flight Compares To A Domestic Flight

Every year, many Americans experience their first flying experience. It is thrilling to be a flyer for the first-time; several flyers are at inconvenience. That difficulty is not being aware of the details about the airline that they will be boarding or the airport that they will be passing through. Being a first-time flyer, you are recommended not in favor of venturing into this thrilling incident without your questions being answered. in its place, you are recommended to find out the answers to your queries.

First time flyers have a limitless amount of queries. Several tourists wish to experience accurately what an international airport is and many others would like to find out what are the finest international airports to take off from. When you have decided to board a flight and fly out of the state, it is recommended that you make yourself acquainted with local international airports as well as details of international airports. After doing so you will be expected discover that you will not only be sure of what you are doing, but you will also boast an improved pleasure for international journey.

United States have two chief categories of airports namely the international airports and the domestic airports. Possibly, the finest approach to study further regarding international airports, i.e. what they are comprised of, how they differ from domestic airports. In the United States compared to international airports, domestic airports are more frequently located. This happens for the reason that basically any airfield is regarded as a domestic airport only.

An international airport is an airport where flights come from other countries to US soil as well as flight from the US goes to another nation. Even though the advertisement shows the information that they focus on international air travel, but in reality most international airports not just have international flights, but also domestic airlines too. Therefore, international airports are frequently bigger in dimension, when measured up to the majority of domestic airports.

How you will manage to look around the airport will depend on the size of an airport. Most, if not all, national airports are comparatively smaller in size; in fact many barely have a few passenger terminals and moreover these terminals are expected to be interlinked or situated all in the same premises. On the other hand International airports are way different than domestic ones. Actually, several international airports are so big passengers have to be shuttled around from terminal to terminal.

From the above discussion it is simple to know about international airports, particularly when judged against domestic ones. Now as you came to know precisely about an international airport-what it does and what it is, you can easily start off looking for an international airport that is capable of providing you the facilities that you require.

Flight Simulator Reviews Led Me to This Flight Sim Beaut

Imagine what it would be like to have every single online flight simulator lined up in front of you right now? If they were there, do you think you would know which one do you pick? Most likely not, unless you knew what you were looking for. Flight simulator reviews are a good place to start and that's exactly where I did begin my search. While taking the time to sift through review after review, I came across one aircraft flight sim that didn't have a review (or a good one at least), but that still looked up my street with regards to value for money and real simulator flying effects.

When I set out to buy flight simulator software, I was interested in a few specific aspects but as I went through site after site, I learned what I should be looking for. This article is the result of my online search efforts!

Note, that I was looking for an all inclusive game where I didn't have to buy separate games in addition to the initial software download.

I want to pay for what I get.

This is what I was looking for in an online flight simulator game.

1. Is the Game compatible with your OS?
2. Is the game updated regularly?
3. Does the game come with clear instruction manuals so that you can get actual flight simulator lessons?
4. Is the sim software realistic? Points to check for - accurate runway markings, realistic terrain, airports, airplanes and helicopters?
5. Can you adjust specific features of the flight so as to create many variables thereby challenging the pilot in varying weather and wind conditions?
6. Can I fly both aircrafts and helicopters?
7. How many aircrafts are available to fly? - Are there more than only combat flight simulator airplanes?
8. Can I set time zones?
9. Is there good support for the software?
10. Does the software have add ons for flight simulator yokes and other external devices?

Once I had all 10 points checked on my list and was satisfied that the flight sim software was indeed going to be worth the cost, I settled on a final product.

Looking back, I am glad that I took the time to search for such a long time for this software

The game I bought took a while to get used to, but now that I have got the hang of it and had great support from the "flight team" at the download center, I am flying a lot more professionally.

Best Places to Visit - For Americans

Best Places to Visit in Europe

Some people say Europe is gone. I really can't say Europe is gone, but I must admit that the countries where the Euro rules are every day more difficult to reach if you are on a budget. In any case, there are some exceptions you should know before taking a flight to the old continent. While Western Europe and the Nordic countries are far gone with high prices, Eastern Europe has recently developed at high speed to offer good services to tourists. Probably Prague is already too exploited, but if you look at Bulgaria or Romania you will find great value for your money.

At same time, with a falling Great Britain Pound during the last months, either buying plane tickets in UK pounds or getting accommodation directly in their currency can be a great option. And this applies to Americans, but also to anybody in the world. Bookings through a falling currency compared to yours are always going to be cheaper. At same time, southern Europe still is in the middle, and even if we can't consider it cheap, normally prices in Spain, Italy and Greece will fit into your budget.

Best Places to Visit in America

Provided that the whole America moves a bit at the same speed as the American dollar does, it will be easy to find deals for more or less the same price that local travel would have. In any case, if you want to find the best value for your money, countries like Ecuador, Brazil or Argentina will be good deals. Also Central America offers many natural paradises within your limited budget.

Best Places to Visit in Asia

If there is a place that will consume all your money it is Japan. This country has never been cheap and it seems it will never be. You'll pay a lot and get few in return, so it should be avoided in case you are looking to travel to Asia. At same time, both Australia and New Zealand are not recommended. Specially New Zealand, as the kiwi dollar sometimes is climbing even faster than the Euro. The best choice in the region is the country of Laos, which has been isolated during the last years and has now opened to the world. Don't expect to find an already built tourism industry, but you'll find great value for the falling US dollar. Thailand has always been good too but recently the mass tourism that is going there is making all prices to climb. Take care with it.

Best Places to Visit in Africa

Generally you will find always good deals in Africa, but the most part of the countries are just on the way to development and you will not receive great services generally. At same time, political problems can restrict traveling for a certain time, as it is happening in Kenya on the recent times. Morocco has always been cheap and it still is, but probably a more beautiful touristic destination is Tunisia. It is becoming very popular recently and some experts say it will be the Morocco of the future. We will see.

Saving in Hotels

For Americans there is nothing better than travel certificates. You can find thousands of discounts in many places, but you will never get the 80-90% discounts that travel certificates can give you with your accommodation and even with your flights. I had a customer in Minnesota that wanted to fly from there to London and spend a week there. I gave her a flight travel certificate for $70 and a 4 stars hotel certificate for 7 nights and up to 4 persons for $130. In this way, she had a total spending between flights and hotel stay of $200 for a 7 days trip to Europe in Deluxe accommodation. As I said, nothing can improve the travel certificate deals, as you are paying only taxes.

Property in Bulgaria - Huge Investment Potential

Bulgaria is a truly magnificent country, located in Eastern Europe with an amazing coastline that stretches over 340km along the Black Sea, with a backdrop of one of the world's most magnificent mountain ranges and the beautiful and historic capital city of Sofia.

Today Bulgaria not only offers one of Europe's most attractive and unspoilt holiday destinations it is also host to what will be one of the most dynamic and as of yet relatively untapped property and real estate markets.

Bulgaria has been invited into the EU and it is almost certain that full membership will start in 2007 creating yet another huge surge in the Bulgarian property market. If you're looking for an excellent investment or a home in the sun then Bulgaria may be a perfect choice for you.

Getting to Bulgaria

If you live in the UK travel to Bulgaria over the past few years has become ever easier. Currently there are a range of direct flights from UK airports flying directly to Sofia in 2.5 hrs. The flights are run by the low cost operators and are priced extremely competitively.

Foreign Ownership of Bulgarian Property

The current property laws may at first seem a little confusing with a ban on foreign ownership of land but an OK to own buildings! Before you start to worry about needing helium filled balloons to hang you property from avoiding the need for any land, there is a solution.

The solution to current property laws in Bulgaria

It is possible to by land via Bulgarian company incorporation. Currently incorporation costs approximately 650.00 GBP. Also other points to note are as Bulgaria prepares to become a full EU member in 2007 it will begin to harmonise its property laws with the EU and also if you decide to by a new property off plan then you will not require company incorporation.

Property prices in Bulgaria

Older properties and especially those in need of restoration seem to have quite a varied pricing structure and if this is what you want then the best bet is to fly over, get your haggling skills up to scratch and you should get a bargain. New off plan costs currently start at around 20,000.00 GBP for a small studio apartment to 120,000.00 for a large luxury 3 bed apartment with best views, facilities and build standards. Chances are that prices will rise significantly between now and 2007, therefore if you're serious about Bulgaria there's no time to loose if you want the best from your investment.

Be quick but don't rush

Acting quickly to get the best property investments is one thing, not taking the time to get full legal advice and understanding of every aspect of the contracts you sign is another. I would always advise you to be careful when purchasing abroad, make sure that you fully understand contract details, payment details and land ownership. If contracts are produced in a language that you don't understand then insist on getting them translated before signing. Buying overseas can be an exciting and profitable experience by taking your time to understand the buying process you will ensure that your property purchase in Bulgaria is a happy and enjoyable experience.

Real Flight Simulator - How Realistic Can a Flight Simulator Possibly Be?

So just exactly how true to life and realistic can a real flight simulator be? How does the flight experience of a simulator compare to flying the real deal?

Here are 5 examples of how the line between simulation and reality has narrowed as computer software technology has evolved over the years:
The instrument panel in a simulator is programmed to look and operate exactly like its real world counterpart. Every button, dial, knob, and instrument looks, behaves, and responds exactly as the real aircraft would.
The simulator airplane's control surfaces can be manipulated in exactly the same manner that it would in real life using the standard flight controls found in a typical aircraft.
Weather phenomena In a simulator affects the aircraft's aerodynamic performance in the same way that it would in real life.
Just as G-forces, center of gravity, weight and balance considerations all play a role in affecting aircraft performance in real life, these are also programmed into a real flight simulator to have the equivalent effect.
Anything that could damage or adversely affect the airplane in real life can also cause damage or harm to the virtual aircraft in a real flight simulator as well. The computer software engineering technology that has given rise to the development of today's modern flight simulation programs has evolved, and continues to evolve, over the past several decades to become more realistic, authentic, and credible.

So much so that, flight simulators are more than just high tech video games. They are bona fide training tools used to train real pilots.

Appreciating Wine - Educate your Palate

When you are tasting wines, you are not quaffing an alcoholic beverage for the enjoyment of intoxication. In fact, at many wine tasting parties and in tasting rooms at many wineries, you do not even swallow the wine that you taste. Wine tasting is more of an art form that requires you to keep all of your senses about you in order to judge wines soundly.

Wine tasting is not how you would always want to enjoy wine, but it is a way to learn which wines you enjoy. By sampling several wines and comparing them to one another, you get a sense of the similarities and differences between them. The more often you sample flights of wine thus, the more of a base you have to judge wines.

If you have trouble being able to tell the difference between a Shiraz and a merlot, the best thing you could do would be to attend a wine tasting that offers a flight of some combination of the two. You will then taste and make notes on each wine, which will help you to distinguish the difference between the two varietals better.

Note taking is an important aspect of wine tasting. In order to remember how each wine looks, smells, feels and tastes, you will need to make notations in a standardized manner for each wine.

In order to take such notes, you will need to consider how each sip of wine affects your senses. First, hold your glass of wine up against a white background in good light. Is it opaque or transparent? Is it dark or light? Before going on to the next step, write down the answer to this question.

After taking in the appearance of the wine, swirl it around in your glass to mix in a little oxygen and then take a big whiff of it. How does it smell? Does it smell more like fruit or flowers? Does it have nuance smells that remind you of anything?

Placing nuance aromas of a wine can be the most difficult step in wine tasting. Often a nuance aroma is vague, though pleasant, but difficult to place. In order to help you place the aromas that you smell, you can utilize an aroma wheel that names the nuance smells that often accompany wine.

If you cannot place the aroma of the wine that you are smelling, check the aroma wheel. Chances are, you will see the name of the aroma that you smell. Write down the bigger smells of the wine and the nuance smells of the wine and then take a sip of the wine.

Do not swallow the wine. Instead, swish it around in your mouth to saturate your taste buds. Make a note of your first impressions of what it tastes like as you hold the wine in your mouth. After a moment of savoring the wine, either swallow it or spit it out.

Lastly, what kind of impression does the wine leave lingering in your mouth after it is no longer there? Write down the aftertaste impression that the wine leaves in your mouth and you will have a complete impression of a wine to which you can compare other wines.

How to Get Cheaper Las Vegas Flights

Las Vegas, the entertainment capital of the world. The sooner you get there, the sooner you can walk down the world-famous strip, hit the casinos or catch one of the wonderful shows on offer. All you need to do is get your flights booked first.

In order to have the best possible holiday, you should spend some time looking into flights to get the cheapest deal. If you are willing to make some enquiries and do some careful Internet comparison-shopping, you should be able to find a more economical ticket.

As well as looking at the major fare-saving websites, there are other ways in which you can bring the price of your Las Vegas flights down.

Begin your search early. Booking well in advance is the simplest way to save yourself some money on your airfares.

If you see a good deal, book it. There is no sense in procrastinating, because if you leave it too late someone else will have snapped up that cheaper fare before you.

If possible, check prices from at least three different departure airports. Budget or cheap-fare airlines tend to use secondary airports and then pass these savings onto their customers, so it is worth looking at the alternatives to see if there are any possible savings to be had.

You can also try booking your flights and accommodation in Las Vegas together to see if this saves you any money. More often than not though, if you use a specialist flight comparison site and the same for your hotel, you will find a better overall deal than perhaps if you book a package through your high street travel agent.

When looking for deals on Las Vegas flights, you can also check if you qualify for discounts with certain airlines. Senior citizens, armed forces personnel and those booking as a group are among those who may be offered cheaper fares.

With a major airport located just minutes from the popular downtown area, there are plenty of flights and carriers to choose from. Las Vegas McCarran International Airport is around 6.6 miles from the city, and you can quickly get to where the action is by taxi, shuttle bus or, if you are feeling flash, then you can go by limousine.

Casinos, gambling, and bustling nightlife all helped to contribute to the nickname 'Sin City', but the continued growth of the entertainment industry means Las Vegas is great for families too.

Luckily you don't have to pay through the nose to enjoy the vast array of attractions the city has to offer. You could choose to stay in one of the many affordable hotels in Las Vegas to lower costs, while still experiencing all of the luxuries and amenities available to make sure your trip is a memorable one.

Once you've arrived, it is time to start experiencing the wonders of this vibrant city. From the stunning neon lights of the strip and the Bellagio Fountains, to the quiet of the desert that surrounds the city, the possibilities are endless.

If you're going for the busy nightlife, do take some time in the many casinos and clubs found throughout Las Vegas. Should you prefer to go for a rest and relaxation, there are plenty of spas and health resorts to while away the stresses of everyday living.

As well as shopping around for a good deal, you can also save more money off your flights if you travel at the right time. If you avoid the busiest months, you could find a good offer.
