Costa Blanca is an amazing 200 kilometer, 125 mile, stretch of beautiful white beach, exactly as its name implies. The Costa Blanca was actually established by the BEA, British European Airlines, as a way to promote their new flight route from London to Valencia. The campaign was immensely successful and the flights brought this magnificent region to the attention of the rest of the world. Costa Blanca has been a very popular tourist attraction now for more than 50 years and the regions major industry has changed from the salt mining and fishing of the past to all tourism all the time.
Costa Blanca runs across the Mediterranean Sea in the Province of Alicante from the city of Denia south to Torrevieja. Benidorm and the city of Alicante are two major tourist attractions located within the Costa Blanca as well.
Torrevieja is a very popular area, with an extremely mild and welcoming year round climate. It is surrounded on two sides by salt lakes and on a third by the Mediterranean Sea. It began life as simply a look out point, with a surveillance tower that now gives it its name in the literal translation of Torrevieja, old tower. Next it was settled by fishermen and salt miners, and these trades are still plied today. The salt baths are also very popular year round with tourists for its healing waters. The fantastic climate created by the lakes also makes Torrevieja a popular golfing destination for many lovers of the sport. There is also a lovely and informative museum in Torreviejo called the Museum of Sea and Salt, with a history of the town's salt mining and fishing industries.
Benidorm is very well known as an incredibly popular vacation destination, with a population that swells from a usual 65,000 off season to over half a million in the summer months. This area is sometimes called the "Manhattan of Spain" recalling the tall hotel and apartment buildings that are unique to this area and that it has in common with the American neighborhood.
Benidorm is very famous for their amusement parks. Aqualandia is the largest water park in Europe, with many slides and pools. Mudomar is a marine park, with an aquarium, dolphins, seals, sea lions, parrots, and penguins. Terra Mitica is a theme park devoted to 5 of the ancient civilizations of Greece, Egypt, Rome, Iberia, and what they call the "Islands" which are now islands that are a part of Greece. Terra Natura is a fantastic zoological theme park.
Alicante is the capital city of the province also called Alicante. This area was historically a port city, and now ranks as the eighth largest metropolitan area in Spain. Its largest industry is tourism, with millions of visitors coming through their international airport yearly.
